As the demand for nurses continues to rise, nursing schools have become
more flexible in their class scheduling. The goal is to encourage more to enter
the nursing field. The result is the ability to finish a degree in nursing while
meeting the demands of their families and jobs. Finding the right nursing school
is sometimes a challenge, but with a little planning and plenty of dedication,
a nurse’s degree is a very attainable goal.
More than ever, adults are returning to school in an effort to make a better
living. Nursing students are no exception. The intensive class load and training
necessary for a nursing degree once made nursing schools a less attractive option
that some other career choices. Nursing schools have met that challenge by offering
more flexible scheduling. For many of the core classes, students have the options
of attending classes on campus, or completing the course requirements online.
Distance learning is also becoming popular and while it doesn’t offer
flexible times for attending class, it does offer flexible locations. Distance
learning labs are common in public schools and education centers. A nursing
student can check in to a satellite location, interact with the teacher and
the class being conducted on campus, and get full credit for completing the
course. For the nursing student who live some distance from campus, that option
could open the door to completing a nursing degree.
Another option that has opened doors for nursing students is the associate’s
degree in nursing. While a bachelor’s degree in nursing – or a registered
nursing degree - is typically a four-year program, the associate’s degree
for an RN is based on a two-year plan. Many health care facilities are coming
to recognize the associate’s degree as comparable to the bachelor’s
degree. Two year nursing schools are becoming more prevalent as many people
opt for the two-year plan to get them more quickly on the road to their new
career.
